Helicopter deck Foam Fire-fighting System
Introduction
Helicopter deck (helideck) is required by the regulations to install fixed foam fire-fighting system using AFFF (Aqueous Film Forming Foam) as its foam liquid which is very effective against fires caused by aviation fuel.
Conventional FMS (Fixed Monitor System) has been commonly adopted as a fire-fighting system for helidecks. However, the latest version of international regulations (MSC.1/Circ.1431) admits DIFFS (Deck Integrated Fire Fighting System) as a safe and efficient alternative to FMS.
Features / Advantages
FMS consists of the foam monitors arranged on helidecks and foam liquid tank unit assembling foam liquid pump and foam proportioner. The system is normally operated manually, but remote operation is also possible with automatic foam monitors with self-oscillation mechanism to make the monitors swing at a set angle and discharge low expansion foam to a specified area.
DIFFS consists of “pop-up” nozzles which have flat top suitable for embedding in helidecks, and foam liquid tank unit assembling foam liquid pump and foam proportioner. The “pop-up” nozzle is designed to “pop-up” by the pressure of fire water when the system is activated, and to spray specified volume of foam solution up to 7m above the deck.
System Configuration
The system mainly consists of foam monitors and foam liquid tank unit (including foam liquid pump and proportioner).
Delivery Record
The system has been delivered to approximately 70 ships so far.
