Ballast Water Management System
(KURARAY MICROFADE™️ BWMS)
Introduction
It has been noted that organisms carried by the ballast water (sea water held on a ship to maintain its stability) on ships going on international voyages can give adverse effect on the marine ecosystems where the ballast water is discharged.
To prevent this from happening, IMO convention has been implemented since September 8, 2017 to oblige to restrict the organisms in the ballast water to a certain level before discharging it.
Kuraray Co., Ltd., an enterprise having expertise in water treatment business, and Kashiwa as a maker of total marine hazard prevention systems, have developed together new ballast water management system that suites for the installation on any types of newly-built as well as existing ships.
Here is MICROFADE®, power-saving, space-conscious, and safe ballast water management system.
Concept of the System
The system combines the filtration process using super fine filters and the sterilization process with chemical agent.
- 1st step: Filtration by Kuraray’s super fine filters (100% of L-size and more than 80% S-size plankton are removed)
- 2nd step: chemical agent is infused to sterilize microscopic plankton and microbes (sterilized water is automatically checked for total residual oxidant (TRO), neutralized by sodium sulfite, and discharged overboard.)
Configuration
MICROFADE® mainly consists of filtration unit, bypass valve, flowmeter, mixer, chemical unit, 2 pumps, and main control unit.
System Features
* Stable and reliable performance
The filters are back-washed automatically for a long service life, and designed for easy replacement.
* Power-saving
Power requirement is drastically reduced by the use of both super fine but low-pressure-loss filters and the safe chemical agent.
* Adaptability
The system is designed to treat any kinds of water, such as brackish water, fresh water, sea water, or high-turbidity water.
The chemical agent also efficiently inhibits the regrowth of plankton and bacteria.
Approval
- G8 type approval (TA) granted by Japanese government in May 2012
- AMS certificate granted by USCG (United States Coast Guard) in October 2013
- As of June 2019, the system is undergoing the test at a test laboratory to obtain USCG type approval
